Dear Book Publishers,
Thank you for taking a hands on approach to publishing our 4th grade
books and bookmarks and for being so responsible and seeing it through
to completion. You are now part of Apache School tradition as the
second annual writing project literary coaches.
On December 4 at 8:15am, Thursday,
we will meet for an Author's Chair rehearsal in Charlotte's classroom
(Village Square-not available). 4th graders will read their stories.
Please make sure you have your 4th graders' stories typed and ready for
them. The finishing touches of editing and collecting their
illustrations will happen on Dec. 4 so publishers can prepare the
manuscript for copying.
Charlotte will have 4th graders work on their book illustrations on
Dec. 1, 2, 3.
In class, on Dec. 4, we will share our family stories and premier your
315 webpages. The following Thursday, Dec. 11 we will not meet for
class but will meet at 5:45-6pm for those who do not have an evening
class to help set up and greet parents.
Question for you: Thank you to Charlotte? Any ideas????
HAPPY THNKSGIVING to you & your Families...................Frances

Dear LLSS 315 Publishers & Editors,
I enjoyed your energy today during your peer conferencing at Apache
and in class. Thank you for contributing in different ways for our book
publications. It will be great momento of your time with Apache
studnets and your UNM peers!
Thank you for your index exit cards. They were very helpful!
Thank you, Emily for being our scribe today. Since Sarah B. was not
here last Thursday, I posted for last Thursday (11/6) and Sarah will
switch with me on Dec. 4.
On Nov. 20
1. with Apache students: state your expectations, goals for your
session and with focused attitude and share your Family story.
I have blank paper for them to illustrate their final draft their
If you need to scribe for a studnet, in the interest of time, go ahead
and write for him/her. In the long run they will be the ones reading
their story again and again. So a little support now will be worth it
in the end.
2. Remember to take their I AM POEMS so Book mark editors type on
computer when you return to classroom.
3. I will bring laptop computer and camera for student pictures.
4. In class, we will work on your book publishing assignments.
For those who finish early, you have options to read/ share your
anthology stories.
5. If you feel you are ready to post your family stories on your
webpage, feel free. I like the suggestion by Clark to add a picture,
just like the 4th graders! The final, FINALE due date is Dec. 4th-same
as 4th grade stories.
Dec. 4, we will premier your webpages and hear you share your family
story. Thank you for keeping your Apache weekly sessions current on
your webpages. On Dec. 11 your final relfections of our class will be
due. You can also use this reflection for your end of the course

Dear Literacy Coaches,
I returned to Apache on Friday, Nov. 7 and made 3 copies of
drafts/outlines/map of 4th graders' stories. Whereever they were in the
process, that's what I copied. So all is set for conducting your peer
group writing conferences this Thursday, Nov. 13.
We will match up 3 to a group on Thursday morning. OK!
Last Thursday you all seemed a little low on interest and energy. I
hope it's not me. However, I can understand that at this point in the
semester, you are growing weary. I hope I can keep you energized until
the end. Stay with me now; we'll do it together!
Your peer conferencing was the highpoint of the afternoon. You imparted
some thoughful suggestions to each other to use in revising your family
stories. Continue to work and refine them. They are not considered a
final copy yet, including mine!
Take care & see you this this Thursday, Nov. 13. Call me if you have
any questions or concerns!-)...................frances

Dear Writing Coaches,
Next week you will meet in small groups to discuss your work students.
I modeled today questions and ideas and want to encourage you to begin
to think as writing coaches and encourage each other during your
professional dialogues about your students.
Jana Wallace did stop by at 3:45pm. She was detained in traffic on
Browning Parkway construction. We agreed that we will wait until next
semester to do the student feedback. Is that alright with you?
I emailed Charlotte about scheduling a peer conference and cc the
email to you.
Remember to work on your drafts of your family stories. For those of
you who have completed one, look at it and see how you could improve
upon it. Make about 4 copies to share next Thursday, 11/6.
Read up on your process writing-315 text page 236. Clark & Miranda, I
will make copies for you of those pages, OK!
Also make sure you are writing your reflections of your work with
Apache students on your webpages.
I will post my Disney pics on my page and....
That's all Folks!-)..........Holler if you need something!-)...Frances

Dear Reflective Learners,
What a pleasure it was to individually meet with you today!
Your conscientiousness in approaching our class was evident in your
thoughtful reflections. I enjoyed your I AM POEMS as it revealed how
creatively you can express yourselves as well as capture the essence of
who you are.

I added a section at the end of my midterm reflection about my what I
learned from you today:
Above all, I enjoyed our one-on-one sessions with each of you. Thank
you.
1. Your Midterm summaries were very reflective, thoughtful and
though-provoking. I thank you for the depth of your reflections.
2. Most are demonstrating "A" quality work from your reflection and
websites.
3. Most are enjoying and learning from the 315 course text.
4. Weekly email updates are helpful.
5. Make more transparent the thinking and strategy behind my week to
week planning and activities so you are also "clued in" to my course
logic and rationale. Provide overview of the next weeks and where we
are headed. Authentic practiticum experience and writing workshop model
ideal for ELL. If there's one effective reading/writing strategy to
learn and practive, the reading/writing workshop is it.
6. alternate writing workshop conferences and feedback with book
anthology discussions/text chapter discussions.
7. Plan an evening pot luck family get together with students and
family members so we can meet the rest of them!
8. Review text chapter scenarios for discussion. Manage time to spend
with 593 graduate students to discuss readings and case study project.
9. The rest of the semester represents a scaffolding to another level
of engagement in the practiticum experience in Charlotte Bradshaw's 4th
grade classroom. You will be working directly with children and
learning from them in the writing workshop model and guiding them
through the process from brainstroming to completed product and
Author's Chair celebration.

compliments of Nicole Chavez! Nicole attended the TESOL training at
Hermosa.

Dear Apache School Coaches,
I hope you enjoyed meeting Vicki Bruno today and our sign language
lesson and discussion. Remember to practice your introductions and name
spelling for next Thursday.
Thank you for 'plowing through' our syllabus. If you have any questions
and need for clarification, please ask. I have tried to lay everything
out for you but of course, any learning is a messy endeavor and defies
a neatly packaged product. I will begin perusing your webpages. I hope
your experiences at Apache with your 4th graders will become the
highlight of our class.
Meet at 8:15am at Apache School
Please be ready with your I AM POEM on Oct. 2. We will meet in
Charlotte Bradshaw's 4th grade classroom at Apache at 8:15. Please
arrive a little earlier to sign in as volunteers.
Meet at 1pm at UNM classroom
We will talk about literature circles next week and if you want to
research them yourslef, check out our course blog at

you will begin to write about. You will put your final draft of your
family story on your webpage.
Begin reading PART IV of our text and your book anthology.
Next week you will have time for your book talks!

___________________________________Sept. 17, 2008
What a fun class we had last Thursday, Sept. 11!
Thank you Elise & Fredrick for posting your session highlights so
promptly and available on our blog at
Heather is our scribe for 9/18!
Class Reminders:
1. Vicki Bruno will be joining us on 9/18 for 4 weeks to conduct sign
language lessons and communication disorder discussion.
2. We will review our course syllabus-finally at 3:30pm.
3. You should be finished reading PARTI (chapters 1-8) of our course
text and post your highlights of vocabularr/term/concepts/summaries to
your webpage under Chapter Highlights/Vocabulary page.
You can view mine at
4. Remember, the purpose of recording your chapter notes is for YOUR
UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT YOU ARE READING. They are intended to act as a
study guide for you to process new ideas, terms, vocabulary associated
with teaching ELL, ESL and different language learners as you will be
doing in your teaching profession. This will also prepare you to take
the TESOL exam. So the time and effort you invest now will pay off in
the end. Own your own learning, be motivated and curious about your own
learning for how else can you inspire children to love learning if you
don't?
5. Enjoy and continue (start) reading your anthology stories to talk
about with each other next time we meet and during subsequent meetings.
I will talk to Charlotte Bradshaw this week, I promise!!!!!
Call me if you need anything!-)...............Frances
