FINAL Reflection LLSS 315
4 December 2008
It is at this point in the semester that I think about all that we haven't accomplished. No visit from Kathy Hurst and the San Juan Media Center; no visit from FMS Bilingual Staff. I apologize for the lack of these experiences and I hope that what you have experiences is no less richer.
This part of our semester was filled with practicum work at Apache school. Working individually, in pairs and sometimes in threes with 4th graders I hope has been a valuable context in which to grow linguistically, culturally, personally and professionally.
I am proud of your reflectiveness documented on your webpages as well as in disucssions about your literary students. You have assumed responsibility for the publishing fo the individual books and anthology and I thank you for your diligence and creativity.
I am aware of some major gaps this semester-one in not discussing more our text. Please remember that TESOL, ESL and ELL strategies are relevant strategies for all language learners. Authentic writing and process writing are the most natural and effective ways in which to invite children into the literary and literacy world. Using their world of stories as the content and context of instruction is efficacious learning and teaching.
We never returned to sharing our anthologies, either. But it has been a productive time as we focused on our practiticum work. I hope you feel a sense of achievement and accomplishment on December 11 as you meet your student's parents and listen to them read in the Author's Chair. We will enjoy sharing our own family stories during our final class together. Of course, our anthology will be a lasting, tangible memory of our learning together with our literacy buddies and UNM friends.
Thank you for trusting me with your learning this semester. May we continue to laugh, grow and learn together throughout your UNM experience.
