On April 2, our class met at , arranged by Shelly. John Teesonie, Dean of Instruction, talked to us about the history and curriculum and we visited Mrs. Sorensen's Navajo language class. Mr. Teesonie and Mrs. Sorensen shared the Navajo philosophy with us and students sang a song for us.

Navajo Preparatory School began as Navajo Methodist Mission in 1925 in Hogback. A flood moved the school to Farmington. In 1970, the Navajo Nation wanted to create a school to prepare stduents for college. In 1982-1990, the Methodist Church withdrew from the field of education and the school was renamed, Navajo Preparatory School. The Methodist Church still owns it with the Navajo Nation renting the facility. Funding comes from the Bureau of Indian Education. Navajo Preparatory School is 18 years old. Ninety-five percent of students go on to college. One-half of the teaching faculty is Navajo.

March 5, Ami wanted to celebrate her birthday at and we all screamed for ice cream! She treated us to a delicious ice cream cake. We sat in Coldstone eating cake and conducted our class. It was a delicious time!

Sarah arranged for us to meet at the Riverside Nature Center on Feb. 26. Docent Bobbe' Bluett described the center's resources and programs. We even had some time to enjoy the warm weather outside and to read/discuss our anthologies together. Riverside Nature Center is a natural oasis within Farmington. Thank you, Sarah, for the cheesecake and the duck for entertaining us!

On Feb. 19 we met at . Mabel Gonzalez and Carolyn Martinez were gracious hosts generously giving of their time and sharing about their new space and growing program.

We visited the on February 12. The FarmingtonDaily-Times had an article about it and on Feb. 18 had an editorial about the significance of the center in our community.

The community center had been planned for ten years and with the assiduous work of Dan Darnell and other city council members, the new facility opened six months ago. Natalie Koehn is the vibrant director who is committed to the community center and making it a resource for the community. They are partnering with the Boys & Girls Club, Desert View Counseling Center and NM Department of Health in providing programming for teens.

Since the community is cut off from the conveniences of Farmington and other neighboring towns, the community center fills a need. Community events such as Soap making, Kids In the Kitchen, Daughters Daddy Ball and Ballroom Dancing are just some of the up and coming events scheduled.
